Does Kentucky license electricians statewide?
Yes. The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC) issues three classes of electrical license: electrical contractor, master electrician and electrician. A contractor applying for a license must name its affiliated master electrician and show proof of insurance under KRS 227A.060 and 815 KAR 35:060.
How do I check an electrician's license in Kentucky?
Use the HBC Licensee Search, choose the Division of Electrical and search by name or license number. It shows the license type, number, status and expiration date.
Do I need a permit for electrical work on my house?
In most cases, yes. Under 815 KAR 35:020 a permit must be obtained before work starts, and a state or local certified electrical inspector checks the work against the National Electrical Code. Your city or county building office issues the permit where it runs its own program; otherwise it comes from HBC.
Can I do my own electrical work in Kentucky?
State law lets a homeowner wire the home they live in, or a home they are building for their own use, but they must get a permit before starting and sign an affidavit that the work will meet the code.
