Electricians in Kentucky

Tell us what you need and we'll find the right local electrician for your project. We know 10 electricians serving Kentucky.

Kentucky licenses electrical contractors, master electricians and electricians statewide through the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC), so you can check any license online before you hire. Electrical work needs a permit and an inspection. Depending on where you live, the permit comes from your city or county building office or from HBC, and the work must meet the National Electrical Code as adopted in the Kentucky Residential Code. Kentucky gets severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and winter ice storms, so surge protection, storm repairs and standby generators are common requests. Our ranking lists local companies that work for homeowners. We check each company's own website, office address, years in business and, where we can, its HBC license, so you can compare them before you call.

Questions from Kentucky homeowners

Does Kentucky license electricians statewide?

Yes. The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC) issues three classes of electrical license: electrical contractor, master electrician and electrician. A contractor applying for a license must name its affiliated master electrician and show proof of insurance under KRS 227A.060 and 815 KAR 35:060.

How do I check an electrician's license in Kentucky?

Use the HBC Licensee Search, choose the Division of Electrical and search by name or license number. It shows the license type, number, status and expiration date.

Do I need a permit for electrical work on my house?

In most cases, yes. Under 815 KAR 35:020 a permit must be obtained before work starts, and a state or local certified electrical inspector checks the work against the National Electrical Code. Your city or county building office issues the permit where it runs its own program; otherwise it comes from HBC.

Can I do my own electrical work in Kentucky?

State law lets a homeowner wire the home they live in, or a home they are building for their own use, but they must get a permit before starting and sign an affidavit that the work will meet the code. Local rules can be stricter; in Lexington, for example, homeowner permits are not issued for rental property, duplexes or mobile homes.

Which electrical code applies to homes in Kentucky?

Kentucky uses the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as referenced in the Kentucky Residential Code. HBC adopted the 2023 NEC effective January 1, 2025, with a few residential sections delayed until July 15, 2026.

Who inspects electrical work in Kentucky?

Local governments with a certified electrical inspector handle inspections in their area. Where a local government has not made one available, an HBC electrical inspector does the inspection, as set out in 815 KAR 35:020.

Why do Kentucky homeowners ask about surge protection and generators?

NOAA's state climate summary notes ice and snowstorms in winter and severe thunderstorms with high winds, hail and tornadoes in the warmer months, and Kentucky averages about 24 tornadoes a year. Outages from these storms lead many homeowners to add whole-home surge protection or a standby generator with a transfer switch.
