Electricians in Indiana

Tell us what you need and we'll find the right local electrician for your project. We know 13 electricians serving Indiana.

Indiana does not issue a statewide electrician or electrical contractor license. Licensing is handled by cities and counties, so the rules depend on where you live: in Indianapolis the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services licenses electrical contractors, while places like Allen County, Evansville-Vanderburgh County and Carmel run their own licensing or registration. Most wiring jobs need a local permit and inspection under the Indiana Electrical Code, which is based on the National Electrical Code. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, winter storms and lake-effect snow in the north all cause power outages, which is why surge protection and backup power come up often. Our ranking lists local companies that serve homeowners. We check each company's own website, office address and years in business, so you can compare them before you call. Always ask which local license the electrician holds for your city or county.

Questions from Indiana homeowners

Does Indiana have a statewide electrician license?

No. Indiana has no statewide journeyman, master or electrical contractor license. Cities and counties license or register electrical contractors themselves, so ask the electrician which local license covers your address.

Which electrical code applies to my home in Indiana?

The Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission adopts the Indiana Electrical Code (675 IAC 17), which is based on the National Electrical Code with Indiana changes. The state has been replacing the 2009 edition, based on the 2008 NEC, with a 2026 edition based on the 2023 NEC, so your local building department can tell you which edition it enforces.

Can I pull my own electrical permit in Indianapolis?

In Indianapolis and Marion County, electrical permits must be pulled by a licensed electrical contractor. A homeowner may apply for the permit only after passing an exam given by the city, according to the Homeowner's Building Permit Guide from the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services.

How do I check if an electrician is licensed in Indianapolis?

The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services publishes lists of licensed electrical contractors on indy.gov and can confirm a license, bond and insurance by phone at (317) 327-1291 or by email at contractors@indy.gov. Outside Indianapolis, call the building department of your city or county, such as the Allen County Building Department or the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Commission.

Who issues electrical permits outside Indianapolis?

Local offices do. For example, the Allen County Building Department covers Fort Wayne, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Commission covers Evansville, the Monroe County Building Department covers Bloomington, and the City of South Bend Building Department requires contractors to be licensed or registered before they work.

Why do Indiana homeowners ask about surge protection and backup power?

According to NOAA's state climate summary, Indiana gets severe thunderstorms with hail and tornadoes in the warm months, heavy winter storms, and lake-effect snow near Lake Michigan. These storms can cut power, so many homeowners add whole-home surge protection or a standby generator, which needs a permit and a proper transfer switch.
